ARTHUR WILLIAM CLEVERLY had been chief colliery engineer of the [[Tredegar Iron and Coal Co|Tredegar Iron and Coal Company]] since 1919. He first joined the firm in 1911 as a draughtsman at the [[Oakdale colliery]], and in 1916 was promoted to be assistant colliery engineer at Tredegar.
