ERNEST FIANDER ETCHELLS had a long and distinguished connection with the London County Council, to whom he had been adviser in an engineering capacity and the responsible authority in many matters relating to structural developments in Greater London.
He was the author of a work on standard mathematical notation and a number of forewords to similar works relating to structural work and reinforced concrete.
Mr. Etchells was born in 1876 and educated for three years at the Manchester Municipal School of Technology and, after his apprenticeship, at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College.
His apprenticeship was for six years with the Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Company, and after a few months spent as draughtsman with a Liverpool firm he became chief mechanical engineering assistant to Messrs. Strain and Robertson of Glasgow.
In January 1902 he received the appointment of engineering assistant to the superintending architect of the London County Council, and at that time he also became a lecturer in structural subjects at the Goldsmiths Technical Institute, New Cross.
Mr. Etchells became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1902. He was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and President of the British Section of the Societe des Ingenieurs Civils de France, and was associated with many other technical societies. and committees.
His death occurred on 5th January 1927.
