He rose from seventh to chief engineer and obtained a first-class Board of Trade certificate. Later he acted as supervising engineer on the construction of three new vessels. On the completion of an engagement as technical adviser to [[J. L. Carty and Co|J. L. Carty and Company]], Glasgow, he became, in 1924, inspecting engineer for [[Rendel, Palmer and Tritton|Messrs. Rendel, Palmer and Tritton]], consulting engineers, Westminster, and for the [[South African Railways]].
