"JOHN FREDERICK AVILA was associated with the electrical side of mechanical engineering throughout his professional career. He received his education at the Brighton Technical College and served his apprenticeship with [[Simplex Conduits|Messrs. Simplex Conduits, Ltd]]., Birmingham, from 1898 to 1900, after which he spent the next two years as sea-going electrician to the [[Peninsula and Oriental Steam Navigation Co|Peninsula and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, Ltd]]. He then returned to [[Simplex Conduits|Messrs. Simplex Conduits]] and during an association of more than twenty years at the London office and works, successively occupied the positions of assistant to the director, manager of the publicity department, works manager, and finally manager of the most important branch in London. He left the firm in 1924 and for the next five years held various temporary appointments, among them being sales superintendent to [[Callenders Cable and Construction Co|Messrs. Callender's Cables Company, Ltd]]., and a similar short engagement with the Union Cable Company, Ltd. After acting as commercial administrator to the [[Liverpool Electric Cable Co|Liverpool Electric Cable Company, Ltd]]., he took up, in 1936, his final appointment as technical sales representative to the [[Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Co|Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company, Ltd]]., London.
