"ARTHUR JOHN CHAPPELL, B.Sc. (Eng.), was head of the departments of engineering and building at the Constantine Technical College, Middlesbrough, having held that appointment since 1929. He was born in 1888 and educated at the Royal Grammar School, Sheffield, and at the University College in that city, where he obtained an Associateship and graduated B.Sc. (Lond.) in engineering in 1913. He served his apprenticeship with [[William Jessop and Sons|Messrs. William Jessop and Sons, Ltd]]., Brightside Steelworks, Sheffield, from 1906 to 1910, in whose employment he continued as assistant engineer for a further eight years. After holding a similar position for a brief period with the [[Monk Bridge Iron and Steel Co|Monk Bridge Iron and Steel Company, Ltd]]., Leeds, he was appointed assistant lecturer in the mechanical engineering department of the University of Sheffield, where he remained until he took up his final appointment at Middlesbrough, a position which entailed the maintenance of machinery and apparatus in addition to teaching and the organization of courses of study. Mr. Chappell, whose death occurred on 1st March 1950 was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1929, and transferred to Membership in 1937.
