WILLIAM HOLMES, whose death occurred on 25th November 1941 in the sixty-sixth year of his age, was chief engineer of the Cornhill Insurance Company, Ltd., until his retirement in August 1941. After serving his apprenticeship with Messrs. J. H. Wilson and Company, of Liverpool, from 1890 to 1896, he went to sea and sailed as a marine engineer until 1905 in various vessels of the Leyland Line, rising to be chief engineer and obtaining his First Class Board of Trade Certificate.
He then joined the staff of the Law Accident and London and Lancashire Insurance Company as engineer surveyor, a post which he held until 1917 when he became assistant manager of the British Arc Welding Company. Mr. Holmes was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1937.
