"Major WILLIAM LYALL POWRIE was associated with the firm of Messrs. Furnival and Company, Ltd., printers' engineers, London, for forty years. He received his practical training from 1889 to 1895 in all departments of Messrs. Peter Brotherhood's engineering works, Westminster, and during that period attended the Birkbeck Institution for his technical instruction.
