"GEORGE JOHN STANFIELD was born in 1885 and received his education at Annan Academy, Dumfriesshire.
Between the years 1901 and 1906 he served an apprenticeship with the Cochran Company, Ltd., of Annan, and obtained further practical training at the Carlisle Corporation electricity works, where he was later employed as watch engineer. After acting in a similar capacity for the Fairfield Shipping Company, Ltd., of Glasgow, and as chief electrical engineer to the Egyptian Mail Steamship Co, of Marseilles, he received, in 1911, the appointment of general manager in the furnace department of Messrs.
