He was educated at Bury Grammar School and at the Rochdale and Manchester Municipal Colleges of Technology. After serving his apprentice ship with [[William Smith and Brothers|Messrs. William Smith and Brothers, Ltd]]., of Heywood, from 1908 to 1913, he was employed for a brief period as jig and tool draughtsman to [[Hans Renold|Messrs. Hans Renold, Ltd]]., of Manchester. He then joined the Forces and served from 1914 to 1916 in the Royal Engineers. On the termination of two years' service with [[Rolls-Royce|Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd]]., at Derby, as jig and tool draughtsman, he returned to [[William Smith and Sons|Messrs. William Smith and Sons]] as chief draughtsman and remained with that firm until 1926, when he took up his final appointment at Bedford. Mr. Hall was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1947 and his death at the age of fifty-three, on 26th August of the same year, occurred only two months after his election. "WILLIAM HALL was the chief jig and tool designer and head of the turbine-gear department in the Queen's Engineering Works of Messrs. W. H. Allen, Sons and Company, Ltd., at Bedford, having held that position since 1926.
