WILLIAM RAYNES WALTON who retained a close connection with engineering in the Manchester district throughout his career, was born in 1867 and received his early training in the office of Messrs. John Hopkinson and Son, consulting engineers, of Manchester, which he entered in 1883.
During his thirteen years' association with the firm he rose from the position of junior to that of chief engineer, in which latter capacity he was closely concerned with numerous steam and electrical installations at important factories and also for public utility undertakings. In 1906 he became chief assistant to Messrs. Miller, Wilson and Pegg, consulting engineers, but four years later he went into practice as a consulting engineer, specializing in the inspection and testing of plant and material.
