James Matthews (1852-1910), commercial manager of R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Co. Previously with the Avonside Engine Co
1879 Patented a tram engine design. Possibly built by Fox, Walker and Co of Bristol or Kingsbury Ironworks, Ball's pond, London in 1879-81.[1]

JAMES MATTHEWS died on September 19, 1910, in his fifty-eighth year. He was commercial manager of Hawthorn, Leslie & Co., Ltd., engineers, of Newcastle-on-Tyne. He was formerly with the Avondale Engineering Works of Bristol, and went to Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1882.
He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1888.
