SINCLAIR COUPER, whose death occurred on 12th February 1944, at the age of eighty-seven, was a Member of the Institution for 49 years, having been elected in 1895. He began a five years' apprenticeship in 1872 with Messrs. Barclay, Clark and Company, Ltd., on the termination of wich he took an engineering course at Glasgow University, where for a period he acted as assistant to Sir William Thomson, under whose direction he was engaged on experimental work in the physical laboratory.
He received his first appointment in 1879 as chief draughtsman to Messrs. Miller and Company, Ltd., Vulcan Foundry, Coatbridge, and became responsible for the design of rolling mill and steel works plant for this country and for export. After holding the position of engineer and manager to Messrs. I. and W. Beardmore, at their Parkhead Forge Works from 1882 to 1887, where he designed and carried out the installation of new plant and buildings, he became a partner in the firm of Messrs. Lindsay Burnet and Company, boilermakers, of Govan, and since 1895 was sole proprietor until he disposed of the business in 1918. Mr. Couper continued, however, to act in an advisory capacity until 1926, when he finally retired.
