"WILLIAM WINTER, who was born in Hull in 1884, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1911 and transferred to Membership ten years later.
He received his general education at the Hull Grammar School and his theoretical training in engineering at the Technical College in that city, where he also served an apprenticeship with Messrs. Rose, Downs and Thompson, Ltd., general engineers, from 1899 to 1905.
After gaining further practical experience as assistant marine engineer to Messrs. T. Wilson, Sons and Company, Ltd., Hull, ship-owners, and as junior draughtsman to Messrs. Marshall, Sons and Company, Ltd., Gainsborough, he joined the London office staff of Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd., as assistant engineer and draughtsman.
