George Lister (c1797-1870) of Uley, Gloucestershire, whose family set up R. A. Lister and Co and Mawdsleys
1817 George Lister walked from his home town of Liversedge, Yorkshire, to Dursley, Glos., where he gained employment as a card-maker in the wool cloth industry[1].
Soon after, on inheriting some money, George purchased Rivers Mill, Dursley and developed it into a tanning and card-making and wire-drawing factory.
Married Charlotte who gave birth to four children, two of whom died young. Charlotte died in 1832.
Married(2) to Louisa, and had four sons and four daughters.
1845 Birth of son Robert Ashton Lister who went on to set up R. A. Lister and Co.
1851 Living at The Rivers, Uley Road, Dursley, Glos: George Lister (age 54 born Liversedge, Yks.), Tanner and Wire Card Maker employing 51 men, 5 women and 6 bys - Widower. With his six children; Mary Lister (age 20 born Dursley); Helen Lister (age 16 born Dursley); William Lister (age 8 born Dursley); Ashton Lister (age 6 born Dursley); Emma Lister (age 4 born Dursley); and Henry Lister (age 2 born Dursley). Four servants and a child.[2]
1861 Living at The Rivers, Uley Road, Dursley, Glos: George Lister (age 64 born Hightown, Yks.) Tanner, Currier and Machine Maker employing 39 men and 5 boys - Widower. With his three children; William J. Lister (age 18 born Dursley), Mechanic; Emma L. Lister (age 16 born Dursley); and Thomas H. Lister (age 12 born Dursley). One servant.[3]
