T. and R. Theakston

Theakstons, brewers of Masham, North Yorkshire

1827 company established by Robert Theakston, a farmer who leased a public house in Masham and brewed his own beer.

1840 New brew house built behind the pub

1875 On the death of Robert the business was taken over by sons Thomas and Robert. The "new" brewery was opened.

1905 Limited company: T and R Theakston Ltd

1919 Acquired Lightfoot Brewery, also located in Masham

1974 Acquired Carlisle State Management Brewery, the only state-owned brewery (nationalised by Lloyd George in 1917, to control the excessive drinking by the munitions workers of Carlisle).

1984 takeover of Theakstons by brewer Matthew Brown and Co of Blackburn.

1987 Matthew Brown were bought by Scottish and Newcastle.

2003 Returned to family control following a successful buy-back by brothers Nick, Simon, Tim and Edward Theakston, great great grandsons of the founder.

2005 Tripled production capacity; all Theakston cask beer brewing now done in Masham for the first time since the company bought the Carlisle Brewery.

Several new cask and keg beer brands have been developed including Lightfoot and Theakston Smooth Dark and a number of new seasonal ales.
