WILLIAM GEORGE MITCHELL was a member of the Institution for over forty years, having been elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1902 and transferred to Associate Membership in 1910, and to Membership in 1915. On the conclusion of a five years' pupilage under the locomotive superintendent of the London and South Western Railway, at Nine Elms in 1905, he received an appointment as inspecting engineer to the Crown Agents for the Colonies.
He held this position until 1910 when he entered the service of the Eastern Bengal State Railway and for fifteen years was employed in the mechanical engineer's department; latterly he held the post of district locomotive superintendent, his last station being at Calcutta. During the war of 1914-18 he served as a lieutenant and later as temporary captain in the Indian Volunteer Force and was on active service in Mesopotamia.
On his return from India in 1925 Mr. Mitchell joined the Vacuum Brake Company, Ltd., Westminster, and was associated with that firm as travelling engineer up to the time of his death which occurred on 21st April 1944, a few days after completing his sixtieth year.
