1836 Observed the Peninsular Co's steam vessels when they reached the Thames
1838 Was in New York when the Sirius and the Great Eastern arrived
1884 Patented his ideas for improved ship propulsion using a "waterwedge", to achieve speeds greater than could be achieved using a propeller.
