We much regret to have to record the death on the 14th inst., after a short illness, of Dr. Rudolph Proell, well known both in this country and on the Continent for his numerous inventions relating to steam engine governors and valve gear. | |||
Dr. Proell was born at Elbing, in Prussia, in 1845, so that he was but forty-seven years old at the time of his death. He commenced his career at the works of a local engineering firm, and from 1866 to 1870 studied mathematics at the Technical Academy at Berlin. where he took his degree as doctor of science. | |||
In 1872 he was called as assistant professor to the Technical High School at Aix-la-Chapelle, where he especially developed his system of grapho-dynamics. | |||
In 1873, while still belonging to the Aix-la-Chapelle school he was for some months connected with the staff of this journal at the Vienna Exhibition, and wrote a number of communications to our columns. | |||
In 1874 he resumed the practice of engineering as chief constructor of the Gorlitzer Engineering Works, subsequently in 1876 establishing himself as consulting engineer at Dresden. During the latter part of his career he devoted himself to the development of his various arrangements of automatic valve gear which have now come into such extensive use. | |||

We much regret to have to record the death on the 14th inst., after a short illness, of Dr. Rudolph Proell, well known both in this country and on the Continent for his numerous inventions relating to steam engine governors and valve gear.
Dr. Proell was born at Elbing, in Prussia, in 1845, so that he was but forty-seven years old at the time of his death.
