John Heathcote

Born near Manchester, England, on 30 April 1833. Emigrated to the USA at about the age of 9.
Started to learn the machinist's trade with the Franklin Foundry & Machine Co at the age of 18. On completion of his apprenticeship he spent 2 years with Corliss and Nightingale, and then moved to W. C. Helme, tool makers, before joining Brown and Sharpe, who at that time had only seven employees. He then returned to the Franklin Foundry & Machine Co as foreman. In 1870 he started making cloth drying and tentering machines.[1]
