JOSEPH CLAYTON, whose death occurred on 17th August 1945, was the chairman and managing director of Messrs. Clayton, Son and Company, gas and constructional engineers, of Leeds, and had been identified with that firm during the whole of his long professional career, including his apprenticeship from 1885 to 1891.
He was born in 1871 and educated at Askern College and at the Yorkshire College, where he attended courses in engineering. After gaining four years' experience in the drawing office and as engineer, he was made a director and in addition accepted a seat on the board of Messrs. Deightons Patent Flue and Tube Company and of the Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Company. He became managing director of these three firms in 1912.
Mr. Clayton had been a Member of the Institution since 1922.
