The Brainard Milling Machine Co was established by Amos H. Brainard in June, 1871.

Amos Brainard was born in Newburyport, Mass, on 27 March 1824. He learned the trade of carriage maker in Boston. He established a machine shop in Boston, before transferring the business to Hyde Park and naming it the Union Vise Co.
