George Harold Upjohn (1893-1953) of Stewart and Ardern
1893 Born at Mortlake the son of George Upjohn, a Carpenter and Joiner.
1948 'Practically the whole of Littlehampton, Sussex, has been bought by Mr George Harold Upjohn, of Burghley Hall, Wimbledon Park. He paid just over half a million pounds for it and so has become the landlord of 13,000 residents. On his land is hotel, two banks, cinema, 50 shops, 850 properties, wharves and guest houses as well four farms and 1200 acres "ripe for development." Mr Upjohn proposes to give sitting tenants chance to buy their freehold. The remaining acres he will develop himself. Investment in property is one of Mr Upjohn's hobbies; He is 55. He managing director a firm of motor agents. Mr Upjohn's other hobby is wood carving and cabinet making which took some years ago on the advice of his doctors following bad illness. He built and equipped a workshop at Burghley Hall, and collected one of the finest libraries on antique furniture the country. Then set out copy old masters and make his own designs. To-day his home is decorated with pieces of his own workmanship.'[1]
