Gilbert Savil Szlumper
Major Gilbert Szlumper (1884-1969), Railway Manager.
1884 Born at Kew, son of Alfred Weeks Szlumper
1902 Worked for London and South Western Railway in the Chief Engineer's (J. W. Jacomb-Hood) drawing office at Waterloo[1] followed by various positions for the railway; for almost 25 years he was the right-hand man of Herbert Walker on the London and South Western Railway and the Southern Railway
1913 Married at Farnham to Margaret Jessie Salter and had one daughter.
1923 Appointed docks and marine manager of the Southern, which responsibility he held until 1927; he was assistant general manager.
1932 Assistant General Manager, Southern Railway.
Best known for:
- Planning and initiation of major Southampton Docks extension
- Completion of Southern Railway electrification scheme.
1937 Became General Manager of the Southern Railway in succession to Herbert Walker
1939 18 Ashcombe Avenue, Surbiton, Director-General of Transportation and Movements, War Office. With Jessie M. Sylumper (age 53) and Cynthia R. Sylumper (age 23).[2]
1969 Died in Chelsea[3]
