"WILLIAM THOMAS ELLISON, whose death occurred on 2nd December 1951, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1942. He was born in 1894 and obtained his practical training as an apprentice with the Churchill Machine Tool Company, Ltd., Broadheath, Manchester, from 1908 to 1914. Concurrently he attended evening classes at Salford Branch Technical College. At the outbreak of the 1914-18 war Mr. Ellison joined the Royal Artillery and saw service at home and overseas. He was demobilized in 1919 as a second lieutenant, and returned to the Churchill Machine Tool Co, assisting in the formation of the production department before, in the same year, undertaking a full-time three-year course in technical and scientific subjects at Salford Royal Technical College. In 1922 he went into business on his own account in Salford as a consultant on special purpose and other machine tools, and as a supplier of machine tools, and the remainder of his life was spent in directing the affairs of the business."
