1914 Incorporated as a private company; total of 9 shops
c.1930 G H Moore, son of the founder, took charge of the business
1935 Grocers and provision merchants. Public company incorporated[2]. Had 114 branches in the North-East of England[3]
1936 Acquired Metcalfe's Stores of Newcastle[4]
1937 Acquired major interest in Kemps Stores in Northumberland and Durham and in Buckley Jones in Wales[5]
1960 Acquired J. D. Marsden[6] and United Kingdom Tea Co[7]
1962 UK Tea Co acquired 102 Mence Smith stores[8]. Acquired Thrift Stores, which were partly owned by some directors of Wright's Biscuits[9]
1963 Acquired George Barr of Scotland. Acquired John Favers and A. E. Smith and Co from Scribbans-Kemp[10]
1968 Having opposed the use of trading stamps, the company ceased giving out stamps at the 20 outlets where they were used[11]. Had 960 shops of which 400 were self service[12]
1972 Acquired by Cavenham Foods[13]
