The nine-span masonry bridge over the River Tyne is a reconstruction of John Smeaton's first completed bridge on the site. This collapsed during a flood in March 1782, two years after completion, an event which affected the engineer deeply. He died in October 1792 and so did not live to see the reconstruction, which survives until this day.
