William Benson Ltd of Robin Hood Works, Robin Hood Street, Nottingham

  • 1855 Company founded
  • Makers of machine tools, stationary steam engines, screw presses, Jacquard card punching machines, shafting, gearing, pulleys, hoists, pumps, malt crushers.
  • 1963 Company closed. Site subsequently redeveloped and road layout altered.
  • All the above information comes from an excellent website which includes illustrations of the company’s products and a plan showing the layout of the works in the 1950s[1]
  • Illustrations and details of some Benson lathes and a small hand-powered shaping machine are shown on the lathes.co.uk website, which also includes a list of prestigious users of Benson lathes. A Benson lathe is installed on HMS Belfast [2]
