Edward Hayes (Stony Stratford)






Engineer, of Watling Works, Stony Stratford, Bucks.
1818 Edward Hayes, Senior was born in Manchester.
Apprenticed to Messrs. Kennedy in Manchester
Worked for London and Birmingham Railway at Wolverton.
1847 Moved to Stoney Stratford to start the Watling Works manufacturing steam engines and agricultural machinery but experienced difficulty in persuading farmers to use steam engines.
1857 Patented the steam Power Windlass.
1861 Silver medal at the Leeds Royal Agricultural Society Show.
Hayes patented surface condensers for marine engines, and a self-moving anchor.
From 1860 the business concentrated on building steamers for coasting, canal and river work at home and abroad. [1]
