Hugh Oswald Hayes was born in 1896 and received his practical training with the Clyno Engineering Co, Wolverhampton, subsequently remaining with the firm for several years in various capacities.

He then took up motor cycle and cyclecar competition driving, after which he was appointed Technical Representative to Solex having specialized on carburation problems.

He died on 13th January, 1937, at the age of 40.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1931.
