1910 Irish Aviation Meeting

A strong wind considerably interfered with the second day's programme of the Irish aviation meeting at Leopardstown yesterday, and no flights were possible until shortly after four o clock, when, the conditions having improved, Grace came out, and accomplished a performance which thrilled the spectators. He gained an altitude of between 300 and 400 feet, but the wind had a velocity of 25 miles an hour, and the air currents were most uncertain, and the aviator's monoplane dipped and swayed considerably. Grace endeavoured to make a turn within the aerodrome, but swept on by sudden wind-bursts he flew on a mile towards the hills, where the atmosphere was calmer. He accomplished a fine turn, and returned to the aerodrome amid loud cheers. There he encountered fierce rushes of wind, and to the spectators the machine seemed to be dropping and swaying in an alarming manner. Grace, however, maintained his splendid nerve, and he finally alighted in a skilful planner, making the descent outside the course in order avoid some trees. He was enthusiastically cheered by the spectators.
Shortly before seven o'clock Captain Dickson flew round the course in a very stiff breeze. His machine swayed perilously, but managed to alight without mishap.
