1897 'The steam launch Alert, 54 ft. long, built by Messrs. Thomas Downie and Co., Toxteth Engine and Shipbuilding Works, Caryl-street, for the firm of Messrs. Wills and Co., Limited, ran her trial trip on September 25. She is the first steamer built and engined by Messrs. Thomas Downie and Co., and is constructed of wood and copper-sheathed. Her engines are of the compound surface-condensing type.' [1]
