1837 Founded by John Ashbury (1806-1866) at Knott Mill, Gorton, south Manchester
1844 April. Fire at Knott Mill [1]
1847 The Ashbury works moved to Ashton Old Road, Openshaw, south Manchester
1848. Patent. 'Sealed llth March - John Ashbury, of Openshaw, near Manchester, railway carriage builder, for certain improvements in the construction and manufacture of wheels for use upon railways and common roads, and in the methods of preparing and constructing the tyres used thereon' [2]
By the late 1850s/early 1860s the company employed more than 3,000 people.
1862 The Ashbury works took limited liability as the Ashbury Railway Carriage and Iron Co
