Edmund Tonks (1824-1898), Barrister and Brass Founder of Tonks
1824 May 23rd. Baptised at Deritend the son of William Tonks, Brass Founder, and his wife Jane
1861 Living at 21 Warwick Road, Solihull: Edmund Tonks (age 36 born Birmingham), BCL Oxon. Barrister not in practice, Brass Founder. With his wife Julia A. Tonks (age 26 born Lambeth) and their four children; Lucy J. Tonks (age 5 born Birmingham); Elizabeth Tonks (age 3 born Birmingham); William Tonks (age 2 born Birmingham); and Isabella S. Tonks (age 11 months born Solihull). Two servants.[1]
1867 of Brass Works, Moseley Street, Birmingham, when he joined the IMechE - hence presumably worked for William Tonks and Sons
1881 Living at Packwood, Warwickshire: Edmund Tonks (age 56 born Birmingham), Brassfounder employing 259 men, 100 boys and 77 women - Widower. With his three daughters; Lucy J. Tonks (age 25 born Birmingham); Isabella T. Tonks (age 20 born Solihull; and Julia Tonks (age 5 born Packwood. Also his sister-in-law Elizabeth S. Johnson (age 49 born South Lambeth), Unmarried. Three servants.[2]
1884 News item. Deritend Ward Liberal Committee visited Knowle 'where they visited the grounds of Mr. Edmund Tonks, who, with his son, kindly received them, and conducted them through the various hothouses and conservatories, which were filled with a splendid collection of choice plants'.[3]
1898 February 7th. Died, of Packwood Grange, Knowle, Warks.[4] Probate to John Edgar Tonks, manufacturer.
