"ALAN EASTWOOD FLETCHER, who was born in 1876, was educated at the City of London College and the Goldsmith's Institute, and served his apprenticeship with Mr. John James Fletcher, London, from 1891 to 1898. After gaining experience in the drawing office of W. and T. Avery, Ltd., makers of weighing machines, he was employed by Charles Williams and Co as a draughtsman and assistant engineer.
In 1905, on the completion of a three-year engagement as assistant engineer to Jukes Coulson Stokes and Company, Ltd., Bromley, Kent, he took up an appointment as engineer-in-charge of contracts in the South of England for Matthew T. Shaw and Company, Ltd., Millwall. From 1915 to 1919, Mr. Fletcher occupied various engineering positions in the trench warfare department of the Ministry of Munitions, being concerned chiefly with the production and inspection of material. His final position, which he held from 1919, was that of branch manager for E. C. and J. Keay, Ltd., Birmingham, with the charge of south coast contracts and responsibility for design and erection of steelwork. Mr. Fletcher, whose death occurred on 3rd January 1951, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1917."
