1934 Obituary

Mr. Arthur Henry Pethick, who was for a number of years a partner Messrs. Pethick Bros., the well-known Plymouth firm of public contractors, died yesterday at his home, 1, Queensgate, Plymouth, after an illness lasting eight months. Mr. Pethick, who was aged 78, had suffered from neuritis for some months, and heart attacks and complications ensued. He leaves a widow and four children.

Mr. Pethick was born in Plymouth, and was the second son of the late John Pethick. He built Kelly College and the Southern Rail way line from Devonport to Lydford. In 1891 he left for Yatton, Somerset, for the construction of the Blagdon Lake Reservoir for Bristol. He went to London 1902 to build Vauxhall Bridge and widen London Bridge. The monument in Whitehall to the Duke of Cambridge was also erected under his supervision.

Mr. Pethick left Messrs. Pethick Bros and went into partnership with another public works contractor, when he went Yorkshire and constructed the Vale of Derwent Light Railway from York to Cliffvale. He retired in 1914.....(image)
