British Syphon Co

1877 The British Syphon Manufacturing Co was started in Barnsbury Street, London, making syphons for mineral water[1]

1913 Private limited company incorporated

1925 The New British Syphon Co was incorporated as a public company to acquire The British Syphon Manufacturing Co as a going concern[2]

1927 The company kept large stocks of syphons because the customer often wanted them at short notice. Each one was engraved with the customer's name and pressure tested before despatch. So in poor summers the company could find it hard large stocks which has to be written off, as happened this year.[3]

1944 Making aircraft tail wheel struts; the company British Landing Gears was made a subsidiary[4]

By 1965 had 3 product lines - syphons, soft drinks and beer[5]

1972 Acquired J. F. Eardley which also had interests in the brewing industry[6]

1973 Name changed to British Syphon Industries[7]. Acquired Skillman Plastics[8]

1974 Had diversified into a range of businesses, with syphons no longer a mainstream interest[9]

1977 The board was located in Sheffield; dispensing equipment had been a growth area; planning to increase the cutlery and packaging activities[10]

1978 Acquired Brook Mason, a private company, and Vending Centre[11]

1980 Chairman was James Eardley; a subsidiary, Coldflow Ltd, offered cooling, dispense equipment and soda syphons[12]

1980 Sold its cutlery manufacturing subsidiary, George Ibberson[13]

Moved to Wilmslow, Cheshire

1982 Merger of 2 plastic distributors, subsidiaries of British Syphon and Hartons Group; the new firm would trade as Valiant[14]

1984 Bid for James Halstead, maker of floor coverings which also had interests in holiday businesses; the current chairman and managing director of British Syphon had both come from Halstead in 1983[15] but this proposal was rejected.

1984 Acquired East Lancashire Paper Group a packaging company[16][17]

1993 A recommended bid for the Group was made by Graystone, which was involved in electrical and mechanical engineering[18]
