1815 Robert Cockburn returned to Portugal after first visiting the country as a soldier fighting under Wellington in the Napoleonic wars, and set up the Cockburns company in the Upper Douro valley, Portugal.

1830 Archibald and Alexander Cockburn were sent, by their father Robert, to open an office in London, due to Britain taking most of the firms export of port wine.

1854 The Smithes family joined the business in Portugal - see Cockburn, Smithes and Co

1863 The Cobb family joined the business, and after four generations a member of that family is still a director of the company.

1962 Acquired by Harvey's of Bristol together with Martinez, Gassiot and Co which were brought together to produce a single efficient unit in Oporto without changing the styles of the traditional ports[1]

1968 Allied Breweries acquired Harvey's of Bristol.
