D Baxter & Co of North Sand Point, Sunderland
1883 'This morning, there was successfully launched from the shipbuilding yard of Messrs D. Baxter and Co., North Sand Point, Sunderland, a steamer 220 feet by 31 feet 6 inches by 15 feet 7½ inches, designed to carry 1,350 tons dead weight. This steamer has been built to the order of the Devon Steamship Company, Limited, Cardiff, the managers of which are Messrs Courtis and Davies, the chairman being Joseph Elliott, also of Cardiff. These gentlemen, along with Hugh Andrews, form the directors of this company. The christening ceremony was ably performed by Mrs. Baxter, Roker-avenue; and the vessel was named the Devon. This vessel has been specially designed carry a large cargo, and is to be fitted with engines by Messrs J. C. Stevenson and Co., Preston, and is also fitted with all the latest improvements in gearing to ensure rapid delivery of cargoes.' [1]
