The shoes are of wrought iron, of the ordinary make, but with pieces of steam-vulcanised indiarubber securely in slots deeply cut in the heel, ....The effect is to ensure .... a firm foothold ... over asphulte, wood pavement, stone, frozen surfaces, and snow with entire safety.'[1]
