1881 Died. 'We regret to announce the death of Mr. Edmund Stead, an old visitor to Harrogate, which occurred at Marston Hall, his residence, on Saturday. Mr. Stead was for many years the principal partner in the firm of Messrs. Stead, Simpson, and Nephews, whose extensive boot manufacturing establishments at Leeds, Leicester, and other places, are well known. He was a sound Liberal, and for a considerable time took an active part in political I matters. For twenty-one years he was a member , of the Leeds Town Council, serving as Councillor for three years, and afterwards as Alderman. To the latter office he was elected on three occasions, and spent eighteen years in the service of the borough in that capacity, retiring at the last election of Alderman two years ago. He was chairman of the Markets Committee for some time, and held other offices in connection with the Leeds Corporation. He was 77 years of age.'[1]
