1888 Qualified in Mechanical engineering under John Perry at Finsbury Technical College

1889 Apprentice at Hyde Park Locomotive Works, Glasgow

1890-93 Apprentice to Mr James More, Junior at Dick, Kerr and Co

1891 Civil engineer's pupil, living with his parents in Norwood[2]

1893 onwards: worked under Mr More on tramways, including repair of the Peckham tramways and construction of the Brixton Cable Line.

In charge of the construction of the Matlock Cable Tramway as resident engineer for Dick, Kerr and Co, the Greenock Corporation Tramways, and the extension of the London Cable Tramways Co's line from Brixton to Streatham.

1901 General manager and engineer, (indistinct), tramways, living in Gipsy Hill, Norwood, in the house of Charles Rotter 67, retired secretary of public company, C Justine Rotter 72, C M Rotter 32, Edward Rotter 30[3]
