ERNEST DU CHAILLU HAARER was a hydraulic engineer during the whole of his professional career; and at the time of his death, which occurred on 13th January 1942 in his seventy-fifth year, he occupied the position of chief engineer and manager of the London Hydraulic Power Company, an appointment which he had held for over thirty years. In 1885 he joined the Hydraulic Engineering Company, of Chester, as a pupil, and later was appointed manager for the Company at Liverpool, subsequently becoming their London Manager. He also became manager and chief engineer of the General Hydraulic Power Company, Ltd., and of the Hatfield Insurance Company, Ltd., and he also held similar positions with Hypower, Ltd., a firm engaged on the development of hydraulic presswork for aircraft manufacture, etc. Subsequently he was appointed managing director of these concerns, whilst still retaining his former position with the Liverpool Hydraulic Power Company.

In addition, he represented the Institution on the British Standards Institution's Subcommittee on Steel Flanges for Hydraulic Pressure. Mr. Haarer was a Member of the Institution for forty years, having been elected in 1902.
