"ERNEST FARRELL, who was born at Salford in 1879, served a seven years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Kendall and Gent, Ltd., engineers, of Manchester, on the termination of which, in 1900, he was employed as an erector at the Harrison Engine Works, Salford. After some further experience as a charge hand with other engineering firms he joined Messrs. Mather and Platt, Ltd., for whom he was engaged as foreman in charge of erection, until 1915, when he went into business on his own account and established an engineering works at Salford, which he subsequently transferred to Oldham and carried on there until his death, which occurred on 6th October 1948. Mr. Farrell was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1920, and was transferred to membership two years later. He had a number of patents to his credit in connection with bleaching, dyeing, and calico printing machinery."
