"FREDERICK JAMES FAWCETT, who was born in 1898, served his apprenticeship with Messrs. Palmer's Shipbuilding and Iron Company, Ltd., Jarrow, from 1914 to 1918, and during the same period attended classes in mechanical engineering at the Jarrow Technical School. After a year's war service as 2nd Lieut. Observer in the Naval Section of the R.A.F. He continued with the above firm for a brief period as draughtsman.

He then found similar employment with Messrs. J. Stone and Company, Ltd., engineers, of Deptford, and was also engaged upon estimates. In 1924 he joined the staff of Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox, Ltd., and after some experience in the technical drawing office and estimating department was for three years assistant to the manager of the firm's branch at Rio de Janeiro.

From 1933 to 1937 he was technical representative to Messrs. Purimachos, Ltd., of Bristol, and for the next three years he was contract engineer to Messrs. Sulzer Brothers (London), Ltd. Subsequently he was employed again by Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox as estimating engineer. His final position, which dated from 1942, was that of contracts manager in the Southern area for the Chemical and Insulating Company, Ltd., of Darlington. Mr. Fawcett was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1946. His death occurred on 18th March 1948."
