G. B. R. Feilden, CBE MA DSc DTech CEng FRS, Fellow, joined BSI as Deputy Director General in 1968 after being Group Technical Director of Davy Ashmore Ltd for 7 years. After obtaining honours in both Mechanical Sciences and Economics at Cambridge, he worked during the war under Squadron-Leader (later Sir Frank) Whittle on jet propulsion, and was subsequently responsible for the highly-successful light industrial gas turbine produced by Ruston and Hornsby. He later became managing director of Hawker Siddeley Brush Turbines.
Dr Feilden has served on a number of Government and other committees, prominent among which was his chairmanship of the DSIR Committee on Engineering Design which issued The Feilden Report in 1963. He has been a member of the Central Advisory Council for Science and Technology, and is chairman of the Engineering Design Advisory Committee of the Design Council. A former Vice-President of the Royal Society, Mr Feilden has served for several years as a member of the Council. He was awarded the CBE in 1966.
