1881 Living at Ellerslie, Milton in Gravesend: George Butchard (age 42 born Liverpool), Engineer, Shipbuilder and Ship Owner employing 120 men and boys. With his wife Mary J. Butchard (age 40 born Scotland) and three daughters and two sons George W. Butchard (age 17 born Gravesend) and John A. Butchard (age 11 born Gravesend.[1]

1901 Died. '...An engineer by profession, about 30 years ago, he established an engineering works on the banks of the Thames, near the Canal Basin (removing thence from the old foundry in Bull-yard, which be had taken from Messrs Troughton and Bevan), but in recent years his personal attention had been devoted to the manufacture of cement, in connection with which he had works at Northfleet. On the formation of the Cement Combine, however, his private interests were merged into the general scheme, and nearly the whole of his time was devoted to the interests of the concern, he being Managing Director. Indeed, since the Combine was started he had done little else outside the heavy and responsible duties which fell upon him in connection with the directorate....'[2]
