Sir George Whitehouse (1857-1938) KCB, civil engineer with much Railway experience
1857 Born in London[1]
1874 Entered King's College, London
1875 George Whitehouse of Hampton Hill, Middx became a student of Inst Civil Engineers
1877 Went to South Africa for the Natal Government Railway. His first commission was with the Durban-Maritzburg railway in Natal. Constructed 2 iron bridges.
1880-81 Worked on the London, Chatham and Dover Railway
1881 Gained a post with the Mexican National Construction Co where he was responsible for construction of 12 miles of the main line. He surveyed and constructed the mountain section of the Inter-Oceanic Railway between Vera Cruz and Mexico City.
After a short spell back in the United Kingdom he was posted to British India. He was employed by the public works committee of the North Western Province.
1882 of Bolan Railway became an Associate Member of Inst Civil Engineers
1886 of Bellary and K. Ry., Nandyal, India
1886 he received thanks from the Government of India for his work in the Bolan Pass.
His next move was to Peru, where he assisted in the construction of a railway in the Andes.
1892 Became a Member of Inst Civil Engineers
1895-1903 Chief engineer of the of Uganda Railway.
1902 Knighted.[2]
1904 Appointed chief engineer of the Central Argentine Railway and the Buenos Aires and Rosario Railway
1911 George Whitehouse 53, civil engineer, lived in Sudbury with Florence C Whitehouse 38, Alfred O Whitehouse 8, Frank L Whitehouse 6[3]
1913 Sent to Brazil in charge of a team of engineers to assess changes needed in the road bed for the San Paulo Railway Company Ltd[4]
1925 Director of J. H. Peck and Co[5]
By 1926 Sir George Whitehouse had retired to Sudbury, Suffolk
1938 Died in London.[6]
