JOHN DAWSON ASHWORTH, whose death occurred on 17th September 1946, in his eighty-second year, was associated with gas engineering during the whole of his professional career.
He was educated at the Grammar School and at the Technical School in Manchester, where he also served his apprenticeship from 1879 to 1883, first with Messrs. J. D. Ashworth, Ltd., and later with Messrs. Sharp Stewart and Company, Ltd., locomotive builders, and Messrs. John Hetherington, Ltd., machine tool manufacturers.
At the early age of 20 he was placed in charge of the drawing office at the Manchester Corporation's gas works. During his tenure of this post, which lasted for thirteen years, he was sometime lecturer for the City and Guilds Institute on gas manufacture at the Manchester Technical School.
In 1898 he went to Portsmouth to take up the appointment of engineer and general manager of the Portsea Island Gas Light Company and began a connexion which lasted until his retirement some thirty years later. Amongst his activities during this long period were the design of a complete new gas works at Hilsea, Portsmouth. Other manufacturing stations were also modernized and extended. He was also general manager of the Portsea Island Gas Fittings Company, Ltd.
Mr. Ashworth had been a Member of the Institution since 1907.
