1840 'THE LATE FIRE.- JOHN ELCE and CO., Machinests and Tool Makers, beg to inform their Friends and the Public that in consequence of the late fire in Little Lever-street, they have REMOVED to the premises lately occupied by Messrs. Evan Jones and Son. Jersey-street. Great Ancoats-street, where they continue the business as above, and take this opportunity of returning their thanks for the support already received, and hope to meet a continuance of the same. 88, Jersey-street, Manchester. 1855 Advertising the following products:- Textile machinery: Openers, scutchers, carding engines and grinding machines for cards, drawing frames, slubbing and roving frames, throstle frames, doubling frames, hand mules, self-acting mules, winding frames, stripping machines, looms, temples, indicators; Other products: dynamometers, lathes, planing machines, centering machines, drilling machines, slotting machines, shaping machines, wheel-cutting and dividing engines cutter making and milling engines, chucks, White's patent portable vices, ratchet drill braces, screw jacks, top roller ending machines, stocks, taps and dies; wheels, screws and worms; shafting of all sizes. 1863 Listed as 'Elce, John and Co, machine and tool makers, and brass and iron founders, Phoenix Works, Jersey Street, Great Ancoats Street.'[6]
1863 Patent 168 issued to John Bell, Foreman, and John Speight, Fitter, both in the employ of John Elce & Co of the Phoenix Iron Works, Jersey Street, Manchester, for certain improvements in the construction of carding engines [7]
1865 Took limited liability to a value of £200,000. John Elce and Co of Phoenix Ironworks, Manchester have been in business for more than thirty years [8]
1866 Patent 3234 issued to John Elce of the Phoenix Iron Works and Robert Cotton of the Albion Spindle Works (Manchester) for improvements in the construction of parts of machines used in spinning and doubling [9]
1879 Advertising as makers of machinery for cleaning, preparing, spinning and doubling cotton, etc., including Booth-Sawyer ring spinning and doubling frames. [10]
The site of the works was subsequently occupied by William Allen (Manchester)
