Captain JOHN JOSEPH CARUS REVILL, R.E., ret., was born in 1880 and educated in the U.S.A. and at Willesden Polytechnic Institute. He served his apprenticeship with the Hendon Athletic Supply Company from 1897 to 1901, on the conclusion of which he entered the drawing office of the Fawcett Construction Company, Westminster. Three years later he was appointed assistant to the chief of the technical staff of Messrs. Fraser and Fraser, Ltd., Bromley-by-Bow, a position which he held until 1916 when h was called up for active service from the National Reserve and was attached to the War Office as inspecting officer for engineering plant.
In 1919 he went to France and was in charge of a technical section with the rank of captain R.E., being subsequently employed in the liquidation of R.E. depots under the Disposals Board. After four years' practice on his own account as an engineering consultant in France and England he joined the staff of Messrs. Spencer Hopwood and Company in 1927 as their London office manager. From 1930 he occupied similar positions with Messrs. Armstrong Whitworth and Company, and finally with Messrs. R. Stephenson and Hawthorns, Ltd., engineers and boilermakers.
Captain Revill, whose death occurred on 31st May 1943, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1921. He was the author and compiler of the "Spencer Hopwood Handbook".
